Threads, Instagram*’s answer to Twitter (aka X), has nearly doubled its downloads in the past few days – even before Ilon Musk sent all his advertisers away.
Meta* has been putting a lot of effort into developing Threads, so it’s no surprise. But does it actually work? Yes, it is working!
Comparing new downloads of Thread and X, we see that Threads is getting about twice as many downloads. In clearer numbers, AppFigures calculates that since September, X has received 27 million new downloads, while Threads has received 41 million.
Those numbers include downloads of Twitter Lite, which has yet to be renamed.
The biggest source of new downloads for Threads is India. It is estimated that 11.2%, or 9.2 million downloads were made in India.
In second place is the US with 7.4% with 6.1 million downloads.
India has long been Instagram’s growth driver, so this isn’t surprising. But it’s interesting that it’s come to the top spot so early.
By comparison, the US is also not the biggest country in terms of new downloads for X. Indonesia is in first place, followed by India and only then the US. Although together these three countries added fewer downloads than India alone for Threads.
The question of who will win this race can hardly be answered, but one thing is clear – Twitter lost momentum after rebranding, and that’s hard to regain. Had the company not rebranded, it would probably be overtaking Threads right now.
