Roblox lets you sell custom avatar bodies and heads

The new opportunity for creators will help more people create a Roblox business and keep them from creating merchandise for competing metaverses like Meta’s Horizon Worlds and Epic Games’ Fortnite.

Roblox will allow users to sell “full avatar bodies and individual heads” they create, according to a Roblox post on the developer forum. The new opportunity for creators will help more people create a Roblox business and keep them from creating merchandise for competing metaverses like Meta’s Horizon Worlds and Epic Games’ Fortnite.

There are some restrictions on what users can sell. Bodies and heads must meet community standards, the marketplace policy, and “go through Roblox’s proactive IP verification” so you can’t sell an obvious Shrek doppelgänger. The bodies will have to have “built-in layers of modesty”, which is a nice limitation for a platform that is very popular with kids. Tradeable parts must be within the maximum and minimum sizes for the avatar to function correctly in various situations.

To incentivize creators to sell virtual bodies and heads, Roblox states that the company “does not require download fees and does not limit the minimum price.” According to the Roblox webpage, accessories and clothing are usually charged at 750 Robux. Creators will receive 30% of the sale of the body or head of the avatar, and another 40% will go to the owner of the place where virtual items are sold. So if you create your own experience on Roblox and sell an avatar body or head in it, you will receive 70% of the sale amount.

While Roblox encourages creators to create and sell limited edition avatars, they are not yet able to make limited editions. But it seems that this situation may change in the future. “We heard your feedback and plan to add the ability to sell bodies and heads in limited quantities, sell them in groups, and also sell them together with accessories or clothes in one set,” Roblox said in a message. “Stay tuned”.

Roblox offers many ways to monetize creators’ work on the platform, including subscribing to private servers and adding “Immersive Ads” to their experience. The company is also working on tools that will allow developers to offer subscription experiences.
