Most downloaded apps in August 2023

TikTok took back the lead from Instagram, which had held the spot since last December!

August was a good month for downloads. For everyone but Threads.

AppFigures has tallied up the numbers and ranked the top 10 mobile apps by downloads in August worldwide.

TikTok was again the most downloaded app in the world in August with 54 million new downloads from the App Store and Google Play, according to App Intelligence.

TikTok took back the lead from Instagram, which had held the spot since last December!

Instagram came in second place with 52 million downloads in August. I wonder if Threads has eaten away some of the installs from Instagram?

Rounding out the top five are Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Facebook and WhatsApp have held their positions for quite a while, but Telegram has been consistently climbing up the rankings over the past few months and has finally entered the top five with 25 million new downloads.

And here is a newcomer to the overall chart – the Temu app. It is usually present in the App Store charts, but has never made it to the overall top.

After ranking 8th in August with 22 million downloads, Temu continues to grow its downloads on Google Play. In 2023, Temu’s downloads from Google Play have grown by over 500%. They will likely continue to grow as the holiday shopping season approaches.

It’s worth noting that Threads is still being downloaded, but not as much as it used to be. AppFigures estimates that the Threads app was downloaded 19 million times on the App Store and Google Play in August, with the number of downloads split almost evenly.

The 10 most downloaded apps in the world received 318 million new downloads from the App Store and Google Play in August. That’s down significantly from July’s figure, but only because of Threads. If you take the new app out of the equation, August was only slightly lower than July, which is to be expected.
