Health Connect goes into beta
For example, Android users will now be able to sync and earn credits for their Peloton workouts across apps like Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers, and Lifesum.
Google announced Health Connect in May at I/O 2022, and more apps supporting it have popped up in recent months. Today, Health Connect officially launches in beta with several major partners.
Since I/O, the Health Connect app has been on the Play Store in “early access”. Now it’s moving into beta status, with Google highlighting several key partners: Fitbit, Flo, Lifesum, Samsung Health, Oura (smart ring), Peloton, MyFitnessPal, WW (Weight Watchers), and Dexcom (glucose monitoring). These early adopters have implemented the integration now.
“With the Health Connect APIs, our engineers were able to easily adapt the existing architecture to read and write user health data such as nutrition, hydration, exercise, and steps,” said Jason Peterson of MyFitnessPal. “With this integration, we can now use data from any third-party app that also writes data to Health Connect, giving our users more choice and flexibility to grant fine-grained permissions on what data they want to share.”
For developers, Google points to reduced fragmentation so that apps don’t have to create and maintain connections to multiple APIs. They can simply get raw data from Health Connect, which uses a standardized data schema. There are over 40 data types in six categories (activity, body measurements, cycle tracking, nutrition, sleep, and vital signs).
For example, Android users will now be able to sync and earn credits for their Peloton workouts across apps like Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers, and Lifesum. Through a single integration with Health Connect, Peloton members will be able to share their workout stats across the ecosystem of apps they use to maintain their overall health.
