Google is updating the Android logo

Google is rolling out a whole bunch of updates to its mobile apps and services. All of this is accompanied by branding updates designed to remind us that Android is not only fun, but also a serious Google product. All of this comes ahead of the imminent release of Android 14, which becomes a slightly less exciting event when you realize that most new Android features appear throughout the year in similar updates rather than in one big platform update.

The updated At a Glance widget has a new design and offers more useful information about events, travel, and local weather. Google is also updating Wallet to make it easier to upload passes with barcodes and QR codes, adding a photo import feature.

The Lookout app, which provides screen descriptions for people with low vision or blindness, will be able to describe scenes more intelligently and answer follow-up questions. Android Auto adds support for connecting to Zoom and Webex calls, though only in audio mode.

Meanwhile, the Android logo will start to look a little different. The font will become closer to the one used in Google’s own logo, and the Android name itself will now be spelled with a capital A. In a blog post, Google brand manager Jason Fournier describes the change, saying that it “more closely mirrors Google’s logo and creates balance between the two”. The robot will also take on a three-dimensional look, with the robot being able to be painted in different colors depending on the situation.
