Google begins beta testing of Privacy Sandbox

This is an Android exclusive solution that uses a standalone SDK, separate from the rest of the app code, with the goal of eventually replacing Ad ID.

The Privacy Sandbox for Android was announced in February 2022. This is a multi-year initiative to protect user privacy in ad delivery based on the Topics API and FLEDGE. Its goal is to prioritize user privacy by default, while still supporting a mobile ecosystem that depends on ads to support free and ad-driven apps. This is an Android exclusive solution that uses a standalone SDK, separate from the rest of the app code, with the goal of eventually replacing Ad ID. The first beta has now been released, but it’s a bit different from how Google usually does beta builds.

As Google explains, users will be prompted to try out the beta via a notification on their smartphone, and there is no way to manually sign up for the beta. This means that even if you have a Google Pixel smartphone running Android 13, there is no way to guarantee that you will be able to play in the privacy sandbox yet. If you are a developer, you will have to resort to the latest developer preview.

If the user receives an invitation, they can control their participation in the beta testing by going to the “Privacy Sandbox” section in the smartphone settings. From this screen, you can view and manage the “interests” that apps can use to show you relevant ads, and you can block topics that don’t match your interests. The beta version can be turned on and off as desired.

Apps will also need to take part in beta testing, and there is no available list of which apps will use Android’s privacy sandbox yet. However, developers will eventually have to drop Ad ID, although Google has promised to notify developers in advance before launching the project.
