Language learning app company Duolingo has today officially confirmed the upcoming launch of its new product, Duolingo Music. The company recruited music experts back in March, and earlier this month it was noted that development of the music app was already underway. At the time, Duolingo declined to comment on its plans, citing that further news would be revealed at the Duocon conference on October 11.
Today, the education app maker officially announced a new “multi-subject experience” that includes the previously launched Duolingo Math app, as well as Duolingo Music and its flagship language learning product in one app. According to the company, the Duocon event will feature a detailed description of the new features.
In a promo video, Duolingo shows off the first official images of the product, which suggests that the updated app will offer “small” lessons, interactive exercises and will allow users to enhance their learning experience. Images of piano and drum keys have been revealed in the Duolingo app’s code, as well as lines mentioning music lessons, songs and music unit reviews, etc.
While Duolingo has not confirmed all the details of the new music product, the company noted that the new app will feature “hundreds” of lessons and more than 200 “fun and familiar tunes.” The app will also feature Duolingo’s proprietary game-based learning system and interactive exercises where users will learn by doing.
According to the company, the decision to get into music was influenced by the need for music education in the United States. According to Duolingo, more than 3.6 million students lack access to music education, and private lessons can cost as much as $400 per lesson.
In addition, studies have shown that learning music helps develop other skills such as reading, speaking, listening and math, Duolingo notes.
The company has long been working to use its learning model in other subject areas.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, Duolingo released a free app for teaching English to children called Duolingo ABC. Last October, the company released Duolingo Math, which was the first expansion of the app beyond language learning.
Duolingo Music and the new app’s multi-subject capabilities will be fully explained at Duocon on October 11.
